Encourage Your Senators to Support S.J.Res.56
Congress is soon expected to vote on S.J.Res.56, a Congressional Review Act resolution of disapproval on the Department of Education’s Borrower Defense to Repayment Rule (“Borrower’s Defense rule”). The Department’s rule would place the burden on students to prove they were defrauded and make it more difficult for their loans to be discharged.
A Congressional Review Act (CRA) is a tool Congress can use to overturn actions made by certain federal agencies. If this CRA successfully passes both chambers of Congress and is signed by the President (or if Congress successfully overrides a presidential veto), the new rule would be prevented from going into effect and would be replaced by the 2016 Borrower’s Defense rule, which NACAC supports.
